9 Highly Recommended Safety Tips For Vaporizer Batteries

 

As most people already know, vaping or smoking electronic cigarettes has become extremely popular. Some say it is safer and healthier than smoking ordinary cigarettes. While that may or may not be true, that is not a debate for today. No, today we are going to discuss the battery safety of these vaporizers. Although we are part of an attorney’s office, it would always be best if you did not have to come to our office with a case involving vaporizer related injuries, or any other injury for that matter. That’s why we’ve been talking to experts on this topic and compiled some safety tips and tricks for taking care of your vaporizer batteries.

We’ll start with a light public service announcement. Many people use vaporizers or “vapes” and even more people love to show them off. That’s fine. However, a vaporizer or electronic cigarette is not a toy and should not be treated as such. While it is true that there are no flames and a spark is not supposed to be present, the vapors still heat up. How hot do they get? Depending but several hundred degrees of temperature. This is how they heat up the e-liquid and produce the vapor that you inhale.

In a way, it makes sense that some vapes tend to explode. Although they are not supposed to, a malfunction can cause a serious problem. There is supposed to be a protective shield between the hot and the batteries, which brings us to our first major topic:

 

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN INTERNAL BATTERY MODES AND EXTERNAL BATTERY MODES

Some vapes have built-in batteries. You don’t take them out, and once they go wrong, the whole gadget or “mod” is as useful as a paperweight. You might be wondering what a “mod” is if you haven’t vaped yet or haven’t vaped for a long time. A mod is a device that you plug your tank or dropper into to vape. A tank or a dropper is what you put the vaping liquid in. Internal battery mods are simpler for beginners, so that’s what most people new to vaping get.

They can come in the form of “pens” or box mods. External battery mods can come in a “pen” mod or box mod. Most external battery mods these days are box mods, as vape pens have recently gone out of style.

This does not necessarily imply that they are perfectly square, as they can come in many different shapes and sizes. External battery mods take batteries that you have to buy extra to put in them. While we will also talk about internal battery mods today, external battery mods will be our main focus. The reason? External batteries tend to explode and cause accidents more than internal battery modifications. This isn’t really because they’re bad in some way, it’s just that you use them more. Whereas, you shouldn’t tamper with the internal batteries at all. We’ll cover that too, don’t worry.

 

TIP # 1 – DON’T TRY TO MODIFY YOUR MOD

Your vape mod, or “battery,” as some people like to call it, was designed that way for a reason. A few years ago a person in Florida modified his vaporizer to use AA batteries. The day after he did this, his vaporizer exploded in his pocket and he lost a piece of his leg.

It may not be a pretty visual look, but some people just won’t follow this advice unless they hear it that way. A vape is put together in a way that makes it work properly. The slightest touch-up can spell disaster. Basically, don’t play around with it in a way the makers didn’t intend.

 

TIP # 2 – KEEP AN EYE ON YOUR EXTERNAL BATTERIES

External batteries have a lot of energy drawn from them when in use. Regular wear and tear is normal, but should not be ignored. Most people use 18650s, but there are other types of vape batteries, both larger and smaller.

It really depends on the type of vape you get. Most of Smok’s mods take 18650s. On the other hand, the I-joy Avenger takes 26650 batteries. The only real difference between those two is that the 26650 batteries are a bit wider.

One of the highlights of vape batteries that people ignore is the battery wrap. This is the protective covering on metal batteries. This is an essential piece of batteries, as it prevents them from connecting to the metal inside a vape mod.

Some vape mods have protective rubber or plastic pieces inside the battery compartment. This does not mean that you should put even partially bare batteries in those mods. When the battery wraps start to deteriorate, you can replace them or just replace the batteries.

Obviously it is cheaper to replace the battery wraps. However, you should only do that up to a point. As vape batteries age, they start to become a danger, which we are about to enter.

 

TIP # 3 – SPARKING BATTERIES ARE BAD

This is another aspect of paying attention to your vape batteries, but this time it doesn’t matter if you have an internal or external battery mod. If your batteries or mod sparks, or you see mini “bolts” for some reason, it’s time to throw both. It might just be the external batteries if it’s that kind of mod, but it’s really not worth the risk of finding out. Why? Because if it’s the mod, you’ll probably find out the hard way.

Sparking batteries are one step away from “catching fire,” as they say in the vaping community. A fire can cause an explosion or fire. You definitely don’t want it to happen. This is especially true for external batteries. There is a type of battery acid in them and if the flames don’t burn your skin, then the hot battery acid definitely will. Which brings us to our next topic.

 

TIP # 4 – AVOID LEAKY BATTERIES

If your batteries are not working properly or have visual leaks, just throw them away. They are a danger to your health, and they will not work properly anyway. Actually, you’d be lucky if they were working at all. Neither type of leaking battery acid is good, so it only makes sense that this type is no different.

 

TIP # 5 – DON’T LEAVE YOUR BATTERIES OR MOD IN A HOT CAR

You may find it convenient not to take your vaporizer to work or college classes with you. Although your workplace or university may prefer it, it is not advisable to leave your vape or vape batteries in your car. In any case, turn off the vaporizer (most vapors can be turned off or just take out the battery) and bring it with you. If you can’t have it, don’t bring it at all.

Think of other items you have in a hot car. Soda cans explode, food spoils, and God forbid you leave any kind of aerosol can in your car. Vape batteries are actually worse than all those things. The internal temperature of your car can reach over one hundred degrees on a hot day. That’s more than enough for your vape batteries to explode and set your car on fire.

 

TIP # 6 – DON’T LEAVE YOUR VAPE IN YOUR POCKET

Many of the new vape mods these days have safety limits. But this does not mean that they cannot explode in your pocket. How does this happen? Well, all vape mods have a button to turn on that you press to make the mod produce vapor.

Only a few are activated by placing the vaporizer on your lips and inhaling. So it stands to reason that you might be accidentally pressing that activation button in your pocket. This is especially true if you like to wear jeans that are tighter than most other pants.

Some say that tight pants are the enemy of a vaper. It doesn’t really matter how tight your pants are. You can press the trigger button simply if you sit a certain way with the vaporizer in your pocket. Many vape mods have locking features or can be disabled. If you are going to put your vaporizer in your pocket, choose one of those two options and do it.

Going back to how this happens. If you are continually activating your mod in your pocket, then you are heating up. You are also creating a stressed drain on batteries. Any of these factors can cause batteries to explode. It may not even explode in your pocket, it may explode on the next hit you take from it. People have legitimately lost their fingers (and their entire hand) in such a case. For this reason, do not keep your vaporizer in your pocket, lock it, or turn it off first.

 

TIP # 7 – CHARGE YOUR BATTERIES THE RIGHT WAY

It’s okay if you don’t know what we’re talking about here. There are people who have been vaping for years who have no idea. The fact is that external batteries should not at any time be charged in the mod. Yes, many mods have a USB port that will charge your batteries if you connect it to a charger. Most accept standard Android charger cables. Don’t, those ports are actually for updating your vape mod software.

What is the correct way to charge external vape batteries? On a battery charger, of course. You can buy these battery chargers from the same place where you bought the mod, tank/dripper, and batteries. You can get one that charges one battery, two batteries, four batteries, or six batteries at a time. It all depends on your needs and preferences.

No, they are not the cheapest items in the world to buy, but they are worth it.

For starters, they charge your batteries better, and your batteries will last much longer than if you charge them in the mod. Also, once you put two or more batteries together, they are “married” batteries. This means that they load each other, which they won’t do in the mod. This is important because one battery will always charge slightly more than the other, keeping them in balanced harmony as they work. Unmarried batteries are significantly more likely to cause injury in one way or another.

 

TIP # 8 – STORE YOUR BATTERIES CORRECTLY

We touched on this a bit with the part about not keeping them in your car. Vape batteries should be stored between 65 degrees and 79 degrees. They should definitely not come into contact with temperatures above 85 degrees. A Florida vape shop owner told us that he actually only leaves his vape at home on days when the temperature is above 85 degrees, and he knows it’s going to be outside.

The reason for this should be pretty obvious: the heat. Don’t let the cold fool you either, as temperatures below 65 degrees can wreak havoc on your batteries. Freezing temperatures can actually make your vape batteries never work again. While they might not explode in that case, that still costs you money, as steam batteries are typically $ 8-15 per battery. It would be wise to protect your investment from any point of view.
